Zeer interessante website, en je hebt je domotica heel mooi voor elkaar!
Ben zelf ook wat aan het experimenteren en ben zelf op z-wave uitgekomen en was benieuwd naar jouw redenen om zigbee te gebruiken?
Daarnaast ook heel interessant om je verhaal over het aansturen van je Onkyo receiver te lezen, maar vroeg me wel af waarom je het ding niet gewoon (helemaal) uit zet met je domotica ipv standby, ben je toch meteen van je stroomverbruik af en het scheelt weer een rs232/ethernet koppeling?

Dank je!
Waarom Zigbee... omdat ik daarmee meer mijn eigen 'draai' aan dingen kon geven. Hang een ZigBee module aan een Arduino of soortgelijks en je kunt alle kanten op; Z-Wave is meer kant-en-klaar spul en het protocol is niet (echt) vrij verkrijgbaar. En natuurlijk omdat ik het gewoon leuker vind om zelf te knutselen ;-)
Voor wat betreft de Onkyo: die gaat 's nachts, als het huis in "Night mode" gaat, ook helemaal uit hoor. Inclusief het RS232/Ethernet doosje. Maar overdag wil je daar niet op wachten, dan moet alles vlot reageren.
Dan wordt de Receiver alleen maar op Stanby gezet, maar blijft de RS232 verbinding constant actief.

Ik hou ook wel van sleutelen, solderen en programmeren, maar ik kan hier niet tippen.
Ik heb een tropische kas met een eigen Remeha cv ketel, die stuur ik aan via 1-wire ic's.

Ik ben ook nog op zoek om de ketel beter te kunnen aansturen, het gaat nu nog via een relais, modulerend met opentherm is natuurlijk beter. |

Allereerst ben ik zeer onder de indruk van je domotica!
Zelf ben ik aan het onderzoeken wat de mogelijkheden zijn met verwarming en domotica. Ik wil namelijk de kinderkamer los kunnen regelen van de andere kamers. En sinds ik dan toch bezig ben wil ik kijken of ik niet alles apart kan regelen.
Nu heb ik een ketel die moduleren aangestuurd kan worden. Helaas zie ik veel z-wave oplossingen die alleen via aan/uit de ketel aan kunnen sturen.
Heb jij het modulerend werkend? En zo ja zou je me dan een beetje op weg kunnen helpen?

| Hoi Rik,
Dank voor je complimenten, hopelijk inspireert het je! Er zijn inderdaad maar weinig oplossingen om de centrale verwarming domotica-wise modulerend aan te sturen. Momenteel doe ik het zelf met het Honeywell EvoHome systeem. Mijn uiteindelijke doel is om de temperatuur regeling in ons huis autonoom te kunnen laten functioneren, maar met wel de mogelijkheid om daar indien nodig op te kunnen 'inbreken'. De reden daarvoor is dat je het thuis ook lekker warm wilt hebben als je domotica systeem even niet doet wat het moet doen (om wat voor reden dan ook). Er zijn wel wat mogelijkheden om een modulerende ketel aan te sturen.

I´m so impressed with all your projects and stuff...really inspiring to visit your blog and site to check stuff out. As I´ve been investigating possibilities to automate my home using not too expensive stuff I´ve kept an eye on PLCBUS wich seems to work pretty well. Now I came across this post in the LinuxMCE forums:

Yes, PLCBUS is very reliable in our home, I use it a lot. But remember, YMMV cause although PLCBUS is less vulnerable to noise than X10, no house (and the equipment connected to the powerline) is the same. Last summer after I bought a new AV receiver, all my X10 modules stopped working; PLCBUS no problem. About the power usage... an appliance module uses an average of 0.3W with no load attached while it's OFF. When you change it to ON (still no load attached), this changes to 1.5W. So in most situations you could say that a PLCBUS module uses 0.3W extra in standby and 1.5W extra while ON.

1st congratulation to your blog, I read many interesting post and I like your style when you always keep the valuable info between the words.
I have made a cable to monitor my Remeha system and it works perfectly - thank you again - , however I need more knowledge to understand what is happening in background. I am an IT/electronic engineer, so sometimes this is and advantage, sometimes is not, because I have many question without answers. :)
This happens with Remeha ,because here in Hungary to find professional guy - who has knowledge - is very hard or impossible. I have common questions about the design, control and programming. I have already escalated these things to Hun Remeha and NL Remeha, but have not receive any help. I can tell you all of the details, but the story have not shown up a really satisfied customer. :(
I would like to ask your help or find somebody or a forum where I can ask my questions. I am sure you have more experience than me.

| Informatieve site zeg. Ben zelf druk sinds twee weken met een Arduino in combinatie met KlikAanKlikUit. Nu nog volledig aangestuurd met EventGhost en dus een draaiende PC. Dit zou ik in de toekomst graag via embedded arduino willlen zien draaien via een EhternetShield oid. Maar weet nu nog niet of dit allemaal al kan met z'n board. Maar goed je moet ergens beginnen, mooier maken kan altijd nog.

Ga binnenkort een nieuwbouw huis (laten) bouwen en kan dus nog alles "from scratch" bepalen. Zijn er nog bepaalde zaken waar we nu rekening mee moeten houden om te voorkomen "had ik maar..."
Alles vol gooien met UTP of is wireless een goed genoeg alternatief?

| Hoi Joost, dank voor je complimenten! Ik ben als het kan altijd een voorstander van bekabeld, zeker met belangrijke apparatuur. Kijk, dat een sensor eens een keer niet wordt ontvangen is niet zo erg, maar het geheel moet wel blijven "werken"! Voor ketel advies kun je beter een expert vragen ;-) Camera... eh, kijk eens op www.domoticaforum.eu, daar zijn ook van veel camera's screenshots te vinden. Ga in ieder geval niet voor het allergoedkoopste is mijn enige advies...

Ik maak al een tijdje dankbaar gebruik van de Remeha info om mijn eigen Calenta uit te lezen..
Momenteel ben ik aan het kijken of homeseer wat is, maar het valt me op dat in het script een kleine bug zit. Wanneer de remeha geen of foutief antwoord geeft krijgt het script een lege string terug. Is er een manier om het script af te breken wanneer de 'data' string leeg terug komt van de readcomport?

Thanks for your compliments, and you're right it costed me a lot of all 3... :-) The answer to your question is quite simple: I created my own domotica software. I started in 2005-2006 with 1-Wire, added X10/A10, RFXCOM, PLCBUS, Zigbee, etc.. When I see hardware I would like to use and I can find enough information to interface with it, I create my own software for it. The foundation for my Domotica system was created in 2006-2007 and from that point, adding a new protocol is nothing more than describing the protocol in software; the rest has already been made. Focusing on object orientation and normalization are the main aspects in doing this. All the best to you too from the Netherlands! |

I'm interested in the RFXCOM device, but I think it will be limited to only three temperature devices (I have some old Oregon Scientific 433MHz temperature sensors lying around). I also found some eZ430-RF2500 sensors by Texas Instruments that apparently have no limitation to how many sensors you can set up that I'm thinking about purchasing instead.

| Great site! I am very impressed with your setup and the amount of data and automation you have achieved. I started with a TED1000 to monitor power use, added in some 1-wire temperature sensors with graphing being handled with rrdtool and round robin databases so I don't need to worry about running out of harddrive space on my linux server. My wife isn't happy about the cat5 cables running through the house for the temperature sensors, so I'm going to try to set up the RFXCOM/Oregon Scientific temperature sensors since I have 6 of them lying around here. I also just got my outdoor security camera working after looking at your site. Thanks for all the documentation and great work! |

Is the only intention of this stick to behave like a normal USB/RS232-XBee when it's connected to the PC? Or are there any additional features like an XBee/Zigbee sniffer or monitoring tool?

I bought a XBee XStick some time ago, but in real life i don't use it... Why? Because my Domotica system runs in a virtual environment called Hyper-V, which doesn't support USB.. :-(
So by the time ZigBee got serious, i had to switch to something else. Now i use a XBee Explorer RS232 board conected to a Serial to Ethernet device. And regarding my email address: i would say, make an educated guess; my first name is robert and the domain name i use is hekkers.net :-)
The XStick doesn't offer anything more BTW!

For me domotic is with Girder, Netremote, some X10, 1-wire temp sensor, teleinfo (French Meters) to get power consumption and a weather station.
