How to measure water consumption

I left the water meter from the water company intact, so i added my own water meter in series right after that one.
The water meters have a rotating dial with a little magnet on it, that triggers a reed switch.

Water meter located at Central Heating for hot water usage Water meter for total water usage Here you see the two water meters installed. The left picture shows my central heating and the water meter for hot water usage, the right picture shows the meter for total water usage, installed in the meter cabinet.

EDS HA7Net for 1-Wire bus This is the HA7Net, that's being used for collecting the data for hot water usage.
Hobbyboards 1-Wire Dual Counter The reed switch from the water meter is connected to an input from a Dallas 1-Wire DS2423-based counter from Hobbyboards. This DS2423 takes care of the counting, and is being polled at regular intervals, either directly by means of 1-Wire or by telling the HA7Net to do so. Then the data is stored into a SQL Server table.
Water usage is stored on a hourly basis, meaning that for every hour that water has been used in our house, there is a record (row) in the SQL Server table that holds the data. With this it is possible to create very detailed charts of our water usage.
